Belgorod Mountain

Layers of chalk on Upland formed about 90 million years ago in the Turonian Sea basin, which extends from the territory of present-day France to western Siberia and covered the whole of southern Europe.

Chalk comes to the surface in the valleys of almost all the major rivers in the region and in the watersheds. Chalky mountains and cliffs and rocks found in the Belgorod, Volgograd and Voronezh regions of the Russian Federation.

Thus, the chalk mountains – it is nothing like the bottom of ancient seas, formed by sediments of dead organisms (immunity, belemnites, brachiopods, bivalves, sea urchins, etc.), which are mixed with an inorganic material and formed a kind of silt deposits. In the course of geological processes parts of the earth’s crust that were down, mixed, rose above sea level, forming a land, then again washed away by rivers and seas.

As a result, in the valleys were exposed ancient sedimentary rocks, which preserved fossils of plants and animals. On chalky slopes, you can easily find the remains of extinct mollusks belemnite that the people often called “the devil’s fingers” or “thunderbolts.”
